Summer stars – Carl Sandburg

Bend low again, night of summer stars.
So near you are, sky of summer stars,
So near, a long arm man can pick off stars,
Pick off what he wants in the sky bowl,
So near you are, summer stars,
So near, strumming, strumming,
So lazy and hum-strumming.

The author wrote clearly with a solid subject of the stars. But the author wrote in a way you could interpret your own opinion.

The awakening – James Weldon Johnson

I dreamed that I was a rose
That grew beside a lonely way,
Close by a path none ever chose,
And there I lingered day by day.
Beneath the sunshine and the show’r
I grew and waited there apart,
Gathering perfume hour by hour,
And storing it within my heart,
        Yet, never knew,
Just why I waited there and grew.

I dreamed that you were a bee
That one day gaily flew along,
You came across the hedge to me,
And sang a soft, love-burdened song.
You brushed my petals with a kiss,
I woke to gladness with a start,
And yielded up to you in bliss
The treasured fragrance of my heart;
        And then I knew
That I had waited there for you.

The author uses a soft tone and uses good word choice such as, lingered, love-burdened, and yielded to show a certain affection and connection. You can interpret that the author had a great love but maybe lost them and now is trying to cope with being lonely. He writes about being a “flower” that you’d touch. The title is “the awakening” and I think that the author chose that because he s maybe realizing she is gone or maybe he is looking down on her and becoming what she see’s.

The dance – Wendell Berry

I would have each couple turn,
join and unjoin, be lost
in the greater turning
of other couples, woven
in the circle of a dance,
the song of long time flowing

over them, so they may return,
turn again in to themselves
out of desire greater than their own,
belonging to all, to each,
to the dance, and to the song
that moves them through the night.

What is fidelity? To what
does it hold? The point
of departure, or the turning road
that is departure and absence
and the way home? What we are
and what we were once

are far estranged. For those
who would not change, time
is infidelity. But we are married
until death, and are betrothed
to change. By silence, so,
I learn my song. I earn

my sunny fields by absence, once
and to come. And I love you
as I love the dance that brings you
out of the multitude
in which you come and go.
Love changes, and in change is true.

The author clearly has a lot of passion for dance, and you see this through the fluidity of her words and the beautiful word choice he uses. For instance, he says “I would have each couple turn, join and unjoin, be lost in the greater turning of other couples,” This line shows that he would rather dance and be lost in it.

Foley Catheter – Kimberly Johnson

I clean its latex length three times a day
                      With kindliest touch,
           Swipe an alcohol swatch

From the tender skin at the tip of him
                      Down the lumen
To the drainage bag I change

Each day and flush with vinegar.
                       When I vowed for worse
            Unwitting did I wed this

Something-other-than-a-husband, jumble
                       Of exposed plumbing
            And euphemism. Fumble

I through my nurse’s functions, upended
                        From the spare bed
            By his every midnight sound.

Unsought inside our grand romantic
                       Intimacy
           Another intimacy

Opens—ruthless and indecent, consuming
                        All our hiddenmosts.
            In a body, immodest

Such hunger we sometimes call tumor;
                       In a marriage
It’s cherish.  From the Latin for cost.

I thought the author made some word choices made it more un connective with the audience, I wish the author made t easier to connect with. I wish that it was more of an allegory so that t could be more interpreted. I thought it was about a woman who had to take care of her husband when he is sick. But she had to stay with him because he is sick and she had made vows to him.
